Follow the money. Find the pattern.
Turn a fictional workshop expense ledger into useful insights.
Where does this workshop spend its money?
A fictional engineering workshop wants to understand six months of expenses. Summarize spending by month and category, then explain the most useful patterns with clear charts. This project is about analysing a ledger, not predicting markets.
Build it, step by step
- 01
Load the 72 rows. Convert date strings to dates and confirm amounts are numeric. These fictional amounts are in Nigerian naira (NGN).
- 02
Calculate total spending, mean transaction size, and spending by category. Check that category totals add up to the overall total.
- 03
Group expenses by month. Find the month with the highest spending and inspect its categories.
- 04
Create a labelled bar chart of category totals and a line chart of monthly totals. Use NGN on both amount axes.
- 05
Write three findings grounded in the data. Include what cannot be concluded without revenue, budget, or more months of real records.
Your project checklist
- Correct total and category sums that reconcile.
- A monthly summary using actual dates.
- Two readable charts with currency labels.
- Three evidence-based findings and at least two limits.
